Costa Rica is one of the top producers of coffee, and, as their number three export, is incredibly important to the country’s economy. Arabica coffee was first introduced to the country directly from Ethiopia in the late 1770’s. Like many countries’ governments, the Costa Rican government encouraged farming by offering plots of land to farmers who wanted to grow and harvest the plants. By 1829, coffee production was a larger source of revenue than tobacco, cacao, and sugar cane. Today, many Nicaraguan immigrants are often employed as seasonal workers on plantations to harvest coffee during peak seasons.

La Candelilla Estate

La Candelilla Estate is owned and operated by seven siblings of the Sanchez family. La Candelilla was the first micro mill to be established in Costa Rica and the pioneer of the micro mill trend. Prior to establishing La Candelilla, each sibling separately managed their own plot of land and delivered their coffee to a co-op managed wet mill. During the coffee crisis of 1997, despite risk and uncertainty, the family made the decision to pool their land and start their own wet mill. After many years of planning, in the 2000-2001 season, Beneficio La Candelilla processed their first harvest of coffee. Under the direction of General Manager Sr. Ricardo Hernandez, La Candelilla has since introduced different processing methods and planted exotic varietals.
